Elmore, a small town on the banks of the Campaspe River, grew rapidly during Victoria’s gold rush of the 1850-60s. In the late 1880s, Butcher Baker was built as a chemist’s shopfront, servicing the population right through until the 1970s. It was then used as a community space, forming part of the Elmore Field Days Office, and as an R.S.L. meeting room.
Recently, the building was lovingly and sympathetically restored by owner and host Dorinda Closter, and uniquely curated with antiques and vintage curiosities collected by Dorinda over the years. Beautiful old glass apothecary bottles, mortar & pestles, signage, taxidermy, and original 19th Century photos are a nod to times past. Not merely luxury accommodation, this is a creative and inspirational space, honouring the history and stories held within the old Chemist’s walls.
The queen bedroom is the ultimate retreat, with a cast iron bed adorned with pure linens and handcrafted BOEM coverlets, sumptuous throws and cushions. In the evenings, warm dim lighting creates a moody, restful ambiance for long soaks in the claw foot bath. Locally-blended bath crystals and handmade soap are provided for your use.
Hidden behind a century-old barn door, there’s also a separate bathroom with spacious walk-in shower, underfloor heating, copper and brass fittings, recycled vanity, and Real World plant-based bath & body products.
Outside, a private paved courtyard with gorgeous vine-covered arbour is a lovely place to enjoy your morning coffee in the sunshine, afternoon tea, or wine with a cheese platter at sunset. Nearby, the scenic banks of the Campaspe River are a tranquil spot for reading and creative pursuits.
Historic Elmore is an easy two hour drive from Melbourne’ CBD – or avoid the traffic and catch the train to Elmore from Southern Cross station. Pack a picnic and enjoy a quiet afternoon on the banks of the Campaspe River, with majestic River Red Gums and superb array of bird life. You may even catch a glimpse of the elusive platypus who likes to play at dusk.
In town, discover the history of the area at the Campaspe Run, Rural Discovery Centre in town. Should you choose to travel further afield, neighbouring towns of Rochester, Echuca/Moama and Bendigo are wonderful day trips.
