Chatsworth Tasmania, 1838

Chatsworth dates to 1838 and was originally granted to John and Will Griffith, who each received 200 acres. It was later granted to Sir Richard Dry, a farmer who turned his hand to politics, becoming the Premier of Tasmania in 1866.

Current owners and hosts Margit and Henry Smith purchased Chatsworth in 2021, and the original cottage has been extensively renovated to retain its original character – including the brick fireplace with convict markings, timber floorboards and high, wood-lined ceilings.

Now a stunning, luxurious country retreat with modern comforts, the interiors were styled by Margit, who hand-selected furniture from antique stores across Tasmania. As Margit grew up in Denmark, there’s also a touch of elegant Scandinavian design throughout.

Sleeping up to six guests, there are three bedrooms, two king bedrooms and one queen, all fitted with Sheridan bedding. One of the king rooms can be converted to a twin room if needed. The main bathroom features both underfloor and towel rail heating, walk-in shower and large, free standing bath for unwinding after a day of exploring. Complimentary amenities are by Lentara Grove, produced with local olive oil, botanicals and essential oils.

The light, open plan living area is a stunning place to unwind. Three sets of French doors lead out onto the verandah, with outdoor setting for al fresco dining and sunset drinks overlooking the garden. In the cooler months, curl up on the comfy linen sofa in front of the cosy wood fire.

The spacious country kitchen is equipped with all you need including pantry staples, to whip up gourmet meals – pick up some local fresh produce on your adventures. You’re also welcome to help yourself to what’s growing in the fruit orchard and veggie garden, and fresh farm eggs from Chatsworth’s chooks. Tea & coffee are provided, including premium coffee for use in the commercial coffee machine. A complimentary bottle of local wine is also included as part of your stay, and the bar fridge has a range of wines available for an additional cost.

Set on a hectare of beautiful established gardens, guests are free to enjoy the surrounds and explore the historic outbuildings on the property, including the old shearing shed – and say hello to the guinea fowl and pet sheep. Lush green paddocks lead you to the your host’s property, Cressy House Estate, as well as the farm’s river for some fishing, a swim, or long picnic lunch.
